Top 10 moments from 2018

Packed with plenty of memorable moments, The Big 5 Construct Kenya returned in 2018 for a successful second edition. The event welcomed more than 13,000 participants, and a record breaking 70% increase in visitors. The Kenyatta International Conference Centre played host to a wealth of outstanding speakers and exciting features during the event, designed to bring the world of construction to Nairobi.


Here’s a selection of the 10 most impressive highlights from the second edition:

1. Ribbon cutting by Prof. Paul Maringa, Principal Secretary State Department of Public Works

The National Construction Week series of events was officially opened at the Kenyatta International Conference Centre by Prof. Paul Maringa, Principal Secretary State Department of Public Works. Designed to promote and uplift the construction industry in Kenya, the week included two major events, the International Construction Research Conference and Exhibition (ICoRCE) and The Big 5 Construct Kenya exhibition.

2. Co-located with a leading conference for the development of construction policy

Organized by the National Construction Authority, ICoRCE is the flagship conference of the National Construction Week. The largest of its kind in Africa, ICoRCE is a critical platform when it comes to the dissemination of construction research, which assists the Authority in the formulation of industry policies. The bi-annual event this year focused on “Harnessing the Potential of the Legal & Institutional Framework for Inclusive and Sustainable Growth in the Construction Industry”.

3. 2,848+ attend certified education

The Big 5 Construct Kenya itself featured a total 40 CPD (Continuing Professional Development) certified and completely free-to-attend workshop sessions. Covering the most recent and important topics in the industry, the workshops welcomed over 2,848 visitors who each received certificates upon completion.

4. Women in the spotlight

For the first time in the country, The Big 5 Construct Kenya launched the Women in Construction education series to highlight diversity and success stories of the Women pioneering the construction industry in Kenya. The series was made up of 4 sessions covering a wide range of construction related topics.

5. Record number of visitors

A growing event, The Big 5 Construct Kenya 2018 had an increase in visitors by 70%, with over 13,000 participants compared to the launch edition. Deputy Head of Mission and Head of Economic Affairs at Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany Nairobi, Michael Derus said: “In the three years that I have been in Nairobi, this event had by far the greatest attendance at an opening I have ever seen.”

6. Bringing international products to Nairobi

The Big 5 Construct Kenya played host to over 220 exhibitors, representing a total of 33 countries across 14 national pavilions over the three-day event. Hon. William Kabogo, Former Kiambu County Governor and proprietor Iguta Paradise Homes said: “The show is really important for the industry – Kenyans usually have to travel far for these kinds of products but now we have them at home. The event really is bringing the world to Nairobi.”

7. Innovation designed to drive Kenya Vision 2030

Local and international exhibiting companies brought hundreds of innovative products to help reach Kenya Vision 2030 through construction related activity. These were showcased across six dedicated product sectors: Building Interiors, Building Materials & Tools, Building Services, HVAC R, Concrete and PMV.

8. Official support puts The Big 5 Construct Kenya on the map

The Big 5 Construct Kenya was helped to be a huge success by the outstanding support of 11 key supporting associations including Kenya Federation of Master Builders, Kenya Green Building Council, and Women in Real Estate to name but a few. dmg events extends a thank you to all of its supporters who helped bring the world’s international building and construction community to Nairobi - we look forward to next year’s edition.

9. Pioneering technology to improve business

Exhibitors at The Big 5 Construct Kenya had access to a powerful lead collection app allowing them to capture client data right on their smartphones throughout the event. Over 61% exhibitors generated 9,931 leads were generated and exhibitors coined it as a must have tool for the next edition of the show.

10. JCB Dancing Diggers back to wow the crowds

The world famous dancing diggers performed at The Big 5 Construct Kenya four times a day. A great way to entertain the crowds and to show off the versatility of these mega machines, the dancing diggers were welcomed back in the latest edition.
